Deputy Fires Gun at Suspect Trying to Ram Him With Car: Sheriff

Sheriff's deputies in Santa Clara County are interviewing a male who checked himself into a hospital Wednesday with a gunshot wound not long after a deputy fired at a fleeing car outside San Jose, a spokesman said.

Deputies have detained two female suspects along with the male suspect, who is suffering from non-life threatening injuries but has denied having any ties to the deputy-involved shooting, sheriff's Sgt. James Jensen said.

At 11:25 a.m., a caller reported drug-related activity in the 3600 block of Sweigert Road in an unincorporated county area in the east foothills of San Jose, Jensen said.

Arriving deputies saw three people and two vehicles, when suddenly one of the suspects drove a sedan toward a deputy. The deputy opened fire into the car, not knowing whether the round struck the driver, Jensen said.

The suspect behind the wheel then drove away without striking either deputy. The deputies then detained the two female suspects.

Later in the day, a male was admitted to a hospital with a bullet wound, but insisted that he was not the one shot while driving at the deputy, Jensen said.

The deputy who fired his gun will have to go to the hospital to confirm whether the suspect was the driver of the sedan. If he is, he will be arrested.

"The two females, I don't know what their involvement is," Jensen said.

None of the three had been arrested as of late Wednesday afternoon as deputies continued to interview them, he said.
