"Hundreds" of businesses, including some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley, urged on Wednesday the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the 1996 DOMA law which blocks benefits to same-sex couples, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
In a brief filed in court, insurance companies, entertainment firms and Web titans alike informed the federal government that "the federal Defense of Marriage Act places an unfair burden on employers," the newspaper reported.
Employees must create "dual" systems -- denying benefits to married same-sex couples while awarding those benefits to traditional couples -- which creates a "burden," the newspaper reported.
Some of the same companies, led by Apple and eBay, may also file a brief asking the court to overturn Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage, according to the newspaper.
The Supreme Court will hear Prop. 8 arguments on March 26, and is scheduled to take up DOMA the following day.
