Sinkhole Shuts Down San Francisco Intersection

No cars or people were hurt when the ground gave way.

A sinkhole shut down a busy intersection in San Francisco's Richmond District Monday night.

Our helicopter flew over the intersection of Lake Street and Second Avenue at 6 p.m. and found a 15 foot by 15 foot sinkhole.

The report came in around 5 p.m.  No vehicles were damaged when the ground gave way.

Police and fire crews re-routed traffic from the area.

It is believed that the sinkhole was caused by an old 21-inch sewer line failure. It began to form round a manhole.

Work crews are expected to take the rest of the week to fix the problem, so it would be a good idea to avoide the area this week.
