Sleeping Bags & Tarps: South Bay Volunteers Need Donations For Silicon Valley Homeless

As rain stays in the Bay Area forecast, a South Bay organization is working to making sure Silicon Valley’s homeless population has ways to stay dry.

Sleeping Bags for the Homeless of Silicon Valley, or SBHSV, is a volunteer group collecting sleeping bags, blankets, and tarps for individuals across the south bay.

“We believe no one should be treated the way homeless people are treated in this community,” said Mark Metzler, founder of the organization. “We’re tapping into compassion.”

Since collections started last year, the group has collected 96 sleeping bags, 43 blankets 125 tarps and eight tents. During the rainy season, they hope to collect more tarps and distribute during outreach missions.

SBHSV says a large portion of their donated items are given to homeless youth under the age of 24.

The organization is in need of more donations. SBHSV will arrange item pick up as far south as Gilroy and as far north as Palo Alto and Fremont. To arrange pick up call (408) 475-6922.
