Fire in El Cerrito School Girl's Bathroom Trash Can Prompts Evacuation

A small trash can fire in a girl's bathroom at El Cerrito High School prompted the school's evacuation Wednesday afternoon, a fire battalion chief said.

The fire was reported at 12:13 p.m. in a bathroom at the school at 540 Ashbury Ave., Battalion Chief Larry Carr said. The school's resource officers reported the fire and began an evacuation.

El Cerrito police and firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported, police said.

The fire had started in a trash can and had created a lot of smoke in the bathroom but did not spread to the school's structure, Carr said.

Students were allowed to return to school at about 12:45 p.m.

The cause is under investigation but it is considered suspicious, Carr said.
