Solo drivers can stay in the carpool lane until 2019, provided they're driving green machines.
Driving in the carpool lane all by your lonesome self will be allowed until 2019 -- provided you have a special car.
Electric vehicles, "plug-in hybrids" (sorry, Priuses) and cars running on alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas will be allowed to use carpool stickers until 2019 under a bill signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
Brown's deal extends carpool lane use by green machines by four years. There are 32,764 stickers issued to California vehicles, the newspaper reported.
With the stickers, drivers also pay lower tolls to cross bridges in the Bay Area, the newspaper reported.
