Son in Milkshake Poisoning Case Sentenced

A tangled web of family issues puts mother and son behind bars.

A Northern California man whose mother was convicted of trying to kill his father with a poisoned milkshake has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Prosecutors say 21-year-old Jonathan Fuentes Ortiz assaulted his father on two separate occasions last year in Redwood City. He apparently blamed his father for his mother's imprisonment.

He pleaded no contest to felony assault in September and was sentenced on Wednesday.

Ortiz's mother, Elizabeth Fuentes, was convicted of attempted murder in 2002 after authorities say she laced Gilbert Ortiz's milkshake with insecticide.

She allegedly fled to Mexico with Jonathan Ortiz after the incident and was not apprehended for eight years.

The now 42-year-old Fuentes is serving a 13-year prison sentence.
