Sonoma Marin Fair to Hold World's Ugliest Dog Contest

The competition will be held on June 23 at the Sonoma Marin Fair.

The Sonoma Marin Fair will be inviting dogs that have strayed from the light of beauty for the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest. On June 23, pets competing will partake in events like the “Faux Paw Fashion Show” and Red Carpet Walk.

The pooch deemed most dreadful will take home a trophy to proudly display along with $1,500 and a trip to New York. While in the Big Apple, both the dog and owner will take part in several media appearances to strut their stuff.

The Sonoma Marin Fairgrounds website states that contestants have been through more than the average dog. Past champions have had history of abuse or physical ailments. By celebrating these success stories, the event is hoping to change society’s perspective on dogs.

Erin Post, CEO of the Sonoma Marin Fair, explained on their website that, “no matter their imperfections, they are adoptable, lovable, and a great addition to any family.”

To get an idea of what it takes to claim this prestige title, participants should look to last year’s winner: Sweepee Rambo.

After Sweepee’s crowning, the 17 year-old Chinese crested Chihuahua was covered by The New York Times. The news source reported that the dog was completely blind and weighed four pounds. While this is not the conventional image of puppy perfection, Sweepee‘s foggy blue eyes and frail body led him to victory.

His owner, Jason Wurtz, told the news source that his dog is a “ride or die chick,” who loves to take the passenger’s seat on his motorcycle. Wurtz received both the cash prize and trophy from the contest.

If looking to enter your own dog, entries are being accepted at the Sonoma Marin Fair office for $10. Applications will be taken until June 21 and can be found here.
