Muralist Aims to Enlighten San Jose, Promote Artists

A muralist and entrepreneur is combining her talents to enlighten San Jose and promote artists at the same time.

Erin Salazar wants to paint murals on 40,000 vertical feet of building walls. She believes artists are underrepresented and has been working tirelessly with the downtown association and their beautify San Jose program to obtain grants to pay artists for their time and materials.

"There’s so much money floating around here that if I just harness it in the form of grants, and start paying artists professional wages for professional work where they can leverage those strengths to help promote them as artists, then I think that is something that is really important," Salazar said.

Salazar wants to help women artists get some notoriety as well. This inaugural piece appropriately enough adorns the walls of the tech shop downtown, a place where you can build just about anything.

An unveiling of the finished mural will be held June 13 from 4 to 8 pm.
