Overturned Big-Rig Spills 4,300 Gallons of Gasoline Near Sears Point

An overturned big-rig caused a complete closure of Highway 121 in both directions near Sears Point Saturday, spilling 4,300 gallons of premium gasoline, the CHP said. One lane has since reopened.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. Saturday. CHP said the truck came around a corner, hit the guardrail and the trailer tipped over.

Because that amount of gasoline can degrade asphalt, only one lane of highway will remain open through Monday. Clean-up crews are expected to remain on-scene until about 5:30 a.m.

This incident prevented more than 100 people at Viansa Winery from being able to leave for several hours.

Other wineries were forced to close because customers could not get in.

The Viansa Winery was also forced to cancel a major fundraiser scheduled for Saturday night for the Golden State Salmon Association.

"We had a good number of people coming and we were told 'you probably need to postpone because the road's closed and they're not letting anybody in or out,'" said Michael Coats of the Golden State Salmon Association.
