A Spare the Air alert has been issued for Friday because of unhealthy ozone pollution expected in the Bay Area, regional air quality officials said Thursday.
High temperatures and low winds are expected to cause smoggy conditions Friday, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which issued the alert, its 10th of the summer season. The most recent alert was issued for Sept. 12.
The air district encourages Bay Area residents to drive less, particularly on Spare the Air days.
"As this late seasonal hot spell brings smoggy conditions to the region, it's important that Bay Area residents take action to improve air quality," air district executive officer Jack Broadbent said in a statement.
"Walking, biking, carpooling, or taking public transit instead of driving alone can help reduce air pollution every day."
On Spare the Air days, the air district advises people to only exercise outside in the early morning hours when ozone concentrations are lower.
People can find out when a Spare the Air alert has been issued by signing up at www.sparetheair.org, calling (800) HELP-AIR, downloading the Spare the Air smartphone app or connecting with Spare the Air on Facebook or Twitter.
