Drowsy Driving Possible Cause of Squaw Bus Crash

Drowsy driving might have caused a fatal bus crash near Truckee over the weekend.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that the bus driver was fatigued when the crash happened, according to the Sacramento Bee. One resort worker was killed and two dozen others were injured in the crash.

The bus, operated by the Resort at Squaw Creek ,veered off the road, "struck a guardrail and rolled several times" before stopping in a ditch along Interstate 80, about 20 miles west of Reno, said California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Skeen.

An ambulance service spokesman who responded to the crash said 27 people were taken to hospitals in both Reno and Truckee after the 8:30 a.m. crash.

The 66-year-old driver is still hospitalized with head trauma.

Witnesses said the bus drifted on to the shoulder of the highway, then hit a guard rail and flipped several times.

KRNV said the driver said he made two stops in Reno early Saturday, but that he does not remember where.

A resort spokesman Les Pedersen said the bus made daily runs to the resort and that it had not had any previous problems.  He said the driver had a "very good record."

"Right now, we're very concerned and worried for our employees," Pederson said.

One witness told the Reno-Gazette-Journal that several people stopped to help the injured.

Bella Fritz that one passenger was stuck under the bus and that another woman had flown out of the bus hitting her head on a rock.
