Sunnyvale public safety officers killed a suspect Thursday morning after the man claimed to have killed someone and police found a dead woman inside a home.
Department of Public Safety Capt. David Pitts said the man had "charged" at officers about 10:30 a.m., which is when a team of SWAT officers returned fire.
"After numerous attemps via bull horns the man charged at officers and we were forced to open fire and shoot the individual," Pitts said.
The man, whose identity was not immediately revealed, was killed, and a woman's body was discovered at a home near Coachella and San Pedro avenues.
The tense standoff began before 8 a.m., when Pitts said the man had called 911, telling dispatchers that he had killed someone.

By 9 a.m., police had surrounded the home and evacuated neighboring homes in this typically quiet area.
SWAT units rolled down residential streets, guns drawn, and negotiators were on loudspeakers urging the man to come out. About 10 a.m., between five to seven loud "pops" were heard, and officers ran into a home with what looked like was a medical bag. "Come out with your hands up!" someone shouted over a loudspeaker.
Just before 10:30 a.m., an ambulance left the scene with no lights or sirens.

Dave Sharpe, who lives in the neighborhood where the shooting unfolded, was surprised to see a SWAT team outside his home Thursday morning.
"I saw the SWAT team pull up and then about a half-hour later I heard 'pop pop,'" he said.
Neighbors also said a couple lived in the home of the shooting for at least eight years, and they rarely ever heard them argue.
