Report: State Worker Fakes Telecommuting to Take Second Job

Unidentified state worker managed to take a second job.

The easiest way to take a second job is to go to work and then "telecommute" to your second office.

A state worker pulled off that trick for almost a full year, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, working full-time at a San Francisco hospital while "telecommuting" to a job working IT, and managing four people, at the state Department of Industrial Relations.

The employee, tasked with keeping the state department's IT network going, accepted a full-time job at San Francisco's Laguna Honda Hospital in August 2010.

The same day, the employee e-mailed his manager at the state and asked if he could take time off to care for an ailing mother and then asked if he could telecommute.

This was not discovered until June 2011 because of "lax" oversight, the newspaper reported.

The employee resigned that month and the manager was "counseled" but not "disciplined."

The department also now has a telecommuting policy.
