Stretch of Highway 80 to Close Over the Weekend as Part of Interchange Project

A stretch of Interstate Highway 80 in San Pablo will be completely shut down overnight this weekend, according to the city's website.

All lanes on the highway between San Pablo Avenue and San Pablo Dam Road will be closed from 11 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

The closure is part of a $118.8 million project to improve a major Interstate Highway 80 bottleneck, the more than 50-year-old San Pablo Dam Road interchange.

Contra Costa Transportation Authority, Caltrans, Metropolitan Transportation Commission and San Pablo leaders on April 1 broke ground on the project's first phase, which is slated for completion in 2017.

The project also includes plans for a new pedestrian pathway on Riverside Avenue that crosses above the highway, which is intended to provide safer access to Riverside Elementary School.

The closure on Highway 80 this weekend will allow crews to adjust and align falsework constructed for that pathway.

Signs will be posted directing motorists to detours along San Pablo Avenue during the closure.
