Sunday's Choice: Monster Waves or Football

The Mavericks surfing contest or the NFC Championship game- that's the choice this weekend here in the Bay Area

The Bay Area has a choice to make this Sunday. Do sports lovers stay inside and watch the San Francisco 49ers take on the Atlanta Falcons, or do they venture to Half Moon Bay to watch the world's best surfers ride monster waves?

Each event is a once a year happening at best, with no guarantee that either will happen in 2014.

The surf contest in Half Moon Bay hasn't occurred since 2010. The 49ers have only been in the NFC Championship once in the past decade.

Maybe there's a way to watch both.

Here's the breakdown of what's happening when:

Surfing starts at 8 a.m. That's when 24 of the world's best surfers will be making their way to Mavericks surf spot. We are providing a link to the live video here.

Watching online may be your best bet. Before you head over Highway 92 to Half Moon Bay with thoughts of seeing the surfers ride the monster waves with your own eyes, you should know people will no longer be allowed to watch the contest from the cliffs or the shoreline.  In the past rocks have fallen on to people sitting on the cliff, and waves have knocked spectators to the ground.

Fans will be charged $20 at the door to watch a live feed of the contest from a nearby festival on the grounds of the Oceano Hotel and Spa at Princeton Harbor. The festival is located on the road to Mavericks and across from the legendary Mavericks Surf Shop.

If you do choose to go to the festival, organizers promise to play the football game on one of the big screens.

And now, back to football, kickoff for football is noon on FOX, when 22 (11 on defense and 11 on offense) of the world's best professional athletes will square off in the Georgia-dome.

Whatever you choose, it's one of those things that should make you appreciate what a great place you call home.
