Sunnyvale Charter School Employee Arrested on Suspicion of Sexual Assault

A Sunnyvale charter school employee was arrested Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl, police said.

According to the city's Department of Public Safety, the suspect, identified as Jonathan Chow, 18, worked part-time at Spark Charter School. The Cupertino man has served as a lunch monitor and teacher’s assistant for the past month.

Located on the 700 block of Morse Avenue, the charter school opened its doors on Aug. 18 and offers classes for kindergarten through sixth grade. Danni Tsai, the school's principal and superintendent, is cooperating with the police and has informed parents about the alleged assault.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, detectives responded to a report of a sexual assault, which police said occurred earlier in the day. The student informed an unidentified person at the school who then called police.

Chow was taken into custody and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on felony charges, police said.

Police have not yet identified additional victims. An investigation is ongoing, the statement said.

People with information about the case are requested to call the department’s Investigation Unit at (408) 730-7120.
