Super Bowl 50 Pre-Party's Cost to San Francisco Taxpayers Still Unknown

San Francisco taxpayers will have to pay for increased public transportation services during the city's nine day pre-party for Super Bowl 50, but the amount has yet to be determined.

According to The San Francisco Examiner, representatives from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and San Francisco Police Department who spoke at Monday's Board of Supervisors Land Use and Economic Development Committee hearing called to address the topic were expected to provide an estimate at what these services will cost, but could not yet offer any numbers.

Host committee chair Daniel Lurie told the publication that the committee has already awarded $1.5 million in grants to charitable groups in San Francisco out of a planned $10 million grant budget.

"We will not only be the most charitable Super Bowl ever, but we will have set a new bar in professional sports and entertainment events," he said.

Whatever the final figure, it should be a drop in the bucket compared to what taxpayers around the country have already invested in the sport. MarketWatch reported that the average NFL stadium costs $250 million in public funding.
