Suspect Arrested in Connection to Fremont Crash That Killed 18-Year-Old

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a May crash in Fremont that killed a high school student who was returning home from her prom, police said Saturday.

Robert Carroll, 22, was arrested Sept. 22 and is now in the Santa Rita Jail, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of committing gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing injury, police said.

Carroll was intoxicated and driving 100 mph when he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Darwin Drive, smashing into the Toyota Yaris in which Shane Marcelino, 18, was a passenger May 14, 2017, police said.

The crash killed Marcelino and sent her mother to a trauma center with serious injuries, according to police.
