Suspect Charged With Stabbing CHP Officer Held on $5M Bail

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man charged with attempted murder and assault on a peace officer made his first appearance in court but did not enter a plea.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that 45-year-old Noel Corpuz was led into court wearing shackles and a red jumpsuit indicating a high-security inmate. He is being held on $5 million bail.

He is accused of slashing California Highway Patrol Officer Andre Sirenko in the neck on Tuesday near an on-ramp to the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge. CHP and hospital officials said the seven-year agency veteran required surgery and is in serious condition. A motive in the stabbing is unknown.

San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi, whose office is representing Corpuz, said Thursday that he could not comment on the allegations until his attorneys learn more.
