Suspect Fleeing Domestic Disturbance Call Found with Thousands in Drugs

Watsonville police found the suspect with a backpack and a safe box and arrested him for public intoxication and resisting arrest.

A suspect who fled a domestic disturbance call in Watsonville Saturday morning was found with thousands of dollars worth of drugs when officers caught up with him, police said.

Police responded to the 10 block of Clifford Avenue at 12:45 a.m. When they arrived, they saw a man jump out of a bathroom window and into a neighbor's yard, police said.

After ensuring that the female victim was OK, police searched yard by yard to find the suspect, eventually finding him in the bushes of a neighboring yard.

The suspect was found with a backpack and a safe box and police arrested him for public intoxication and resisting arrest.

After searching his belongings, police said they found a half-pound of marijuana, 368 ecstasy pills, 5.6 grams of methamphetamine and $31,350 cash.

Police identified the man as Abel Chavez, 52, of Watsonville. He was also arrested for possession of narcotics for sale, and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.
