Suspicious Grenade That Causes Evacuation Turns Out to be Novelty Cigarette Lighter

A  man with "good intentions" delivered a possible grenade in a paper cup on Sunday afternoon, San Rafael police said, prompting an evacuation of the department and the temporary shutdown of some nearby streets.

Police shut down Fifth Avenue between C and E streets for safety reasons around 6 p.m., treating the package as if it were real, police said.

The University of California at Berkeley police bomb squad was called in to help. But officers interviewed the man who brought in the device who told them that the hollowed out grenade was really a movelty cigarette lighter, police said.

At 6:40 p.m., the all-clear was given, and no one was arrested.
