Teams to Search Mt. Shasta for Stranded Climber

Friend rescued Monday

Rescuers on Wednesday will launch an effort to find an Oakland man stranded high up on Mount Shasta for days. But it may be too late.

Thomas Bennett and his friend, Mark Thomas, both 26, started climbing the 14,126-foot mountain Thursday but stormy weather trapped the pair when they tried to come down from the mountain Saturday. Thomas had to leave Bennett behind because he became sick, he told rescuers.

Thomas was rescued Monday after he walked down the mountain looking for help. He left Bennett in a snow cave with some snacks and water. He told authorities Bennett was unresponsive and he thought he could be dead.

State and federal agencies are assisting with helicopters and rescue teams.
