Thunderstorm in Southern California Causes Emergency Flight Landings

Several flights have turned back or made emergency landings after being hit by lighting near Southern California on Saturday.

Alaska Airlines flight 6, a Boeing 737 from LAX to Washington National, returned to LAX after declaring an emergency due to a lightning strike, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Alaska flight made a safe landing around 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Southwest Airlines Flight 3191 from Oakland also landed safely at its destination of Orange County after encountering a lightning strike, according to Southwest.

The thunderstorms in Southern California are part of the same system that nearly hit Mexico. The National Weather Service issued several flash flood warnings for certain parts of Southern California.
