Tree Damages Diablo Valley Home

The tree fell on the day on a day rain was in the forecast, but not a drop had fallen

An old Heritage Oak tree fell onto a home in the city of Diablo Monday afternoon, rendering the house uninhabitable.

The home is near the Diablo Country Club, in Contra Costa County. It's considered a total loss, according to the San Ramon Valley fire department.

Luckily no one was hurt. The homeowners were inside when the tree fell, but escaped injury. They said they thought it was an earthquake.

The home has been red tagged, which means the owners can't go inside even to retrieve belongings. The fear, according to the fire department, is that the roof could collapse.

A tree expert has been called to examine the tree to see why it fell.  The old Heritage Oak is estimated to be between 300-400 years old.

The damage estimate to the home is $2 million.

Two vehicles in the driveway were also destroyed by falling branches from the tree. One of the vehicles was a golf cart that was split in half by a single branch.
