Two Arrested After Pipe Bomb Destroys Mailbox

Five teenagers arrested in nearby high school parking lot

Police arrested two juveniles in Pleasant Hill Friday night after they allegedly blew up a mailbox with a homemade bomb.

Around 9:55 p.m., officers responded to reports of an explosion heard in the area of Christine Court in Pleasant Hill, police said.

Officers quickly determined that someone had used an explosive device to destroy a freestanding metal mailbox in the area.

No injuries were reported. Police said a witness reported seeing a red SUV leaving the area just after the explosion.

Officers then searched the area and located a similar vehicle in the parking lot of College Park High School at 201 Viking Dr. around 10:15 p.m.

After searching the car, an officer located another intact explosive device and detained five teenagers associated with the vehicle, police said.

The Walnut Creek Bomb Squad arrived responded and dismantled the homemade explosive. Police arrested two of the teens, whose names are being withheld because they are juveniles, on suspicion of possessing explosives.

A third teen was arrested on unrelated charges, and the other two were released to their parents at the scene.
