Two Die When SUV Rolls Down Embankment, Catches in Fire

Two people died after a car the California Highway Patrol said was speeding hit a white SUV, which burst into flames, killing the driver and passenger inside.

CHP Officer Joseph Azevedo said the crash occurred off eastbound Interstate Highway 580 near the San Ramon offramp in Dublin about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

When the SUV was hit, it rolled down an embankment and caused a grass fire, Azevedp said, and when CHP officers arrived, they didn't realize that two people were inside. By then it was too late.

"It was completely engulfed," Azevedo said. "There was no way to get the occupants."

A witness to the accident said the speeding car was traveling faster than 65 miles per hour.

No further details were immediately available.
