Two Die in South Bay Crash

The driver in Thursday's single-vehicle crash that killed two men in Gilroy was arrested.

Police said David Torres, 19, was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of fleeing the scene of an accident.

Two passengers were inside the car Torres was driving when it crashed at Sixth and Alexander streets at about 1 a.m.

Police said just before the crash, officers who were on foot noticed a white car cross Monterey Street at a high rate of speed. Moments later, emergency dispatch received a call about a single-vehicle rollover crash.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found one person ejected from the vehicle and another person inside the car. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers later located a third man, identified as Torres, who authorities said fled from the scene on foot. Torres was taken to a local trauma center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The car also struck a light pole, which caused part of the pole to become sheared off and fall into a nearby house. The house was damaged, but nobody inside was injured, police said.

The names of the two men killed are being withheld until next of kin is notified.
