Two Giants Players in the Mix For 2016 Cy Young Award

It's that time of year when baseball fans start rumors about frontrunners for the Cy Young award in the national and American leagues.

This year, two San Francisco Giants players, who have demonstrated dominance and consistency on the hill, find themselves in the running for the award.

First-year Giants starter Johnny Cueto was signed as a free agent by San Francisco in the offseason. Cueto, 30, spent most of his career with the Cincinnati Reds before being dealt to the Kansas City Royals last season at the trade deadline. There, he went on to win the World Series.

Cueto has made an immediate impact with the Giants, winning 16 games in his first season and sporting an impressive 2.86 ERA in five complete games.

The Giants righty has established himself as an ace by the Bay, going deep into ballgames and helping the team win important games down the stretch. Arguably, his most important outing of the season came Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals when he went the distance and helped the Giants win a game they had to win.

Cueto has three more starts this season to keep bolstering his numbers before the season ends.

Next up is Madison Bumgarner.

Giants fans know all too well the struggle it has been for the 26-year-old lefty ace to get the attention he deserves.

Bumgarner has been the model of a pitching horse in his eight-year big league career. He has eclipsed 200 plus innings in the past six seasons, while lowering his ERA each time.

However, the veteran player has seen his name passed over in the CY Young conversation for four years because of the mind-blowing numbers posted by Los Angeles Dodgers' left-hander Clayton Kershaw. In 2016, Bumgarner finally has a chance to shine because of Kershaw’s long stint on the disabled list.

Bumgarner has three more starts this season to add to his 2016 CY Young resume, two of which will come against Kershaw.

Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez, Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer, and the Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks and left-hander Jon Lester are also up for Cy Young consideration.
