UberX Prices Drop 15 Percent Around Bay Area, Except in San Francisco

Starting Friday, the price of UberX fares will drop 15 percent in the East Bay, South Bay, and in Peninsula cities south of SFO. An Uber spokesperson says the company is making the change to increase demand and “make the rides more affordable for everyone.”

One Uber driver who did not want to be identified contacted NBC Bay Area when he received an email from the company with the fare changes. He says the change will slash his profits.

"We used to actually make a decent living when we first started out but now with all the cuts, we're basically on poverty wages,” the driver said.

The company issued a statement on the 15 percent drop in fares:

"At Uber we’re always looking for ways to deliver lower prices to riders to make Uber an everyday transportation option. The upside for riders is obvious, but also important is that with the increased demand for affordable rides, drivers’ income goes up as well. We’re confident that drivers will see increased demand and as a result increase their earnings.”
