Unlike Newsom, Ed Lee Answers Questions

San Francisco's new mayor is going where Gavin Newsom didn't dare: in front of the Board of Supervisors.

Ed Lee has promised to be the first mayor to participate in Question Time, a monthly Q&A with the Supes. Originally proposed by Chris Daly, Question Time was intended to compel Newsom to publicly interact with other elected leaders.

Although voters overwhelmingly approved of the idea, Newsom consistently declined to participate. He claimed that the event was purely for show and wouldn't accomplish anything, according to the Ex.

The Board pushed harder, and eventually won passage of a measure that made Question Time mandatory.

It's unclear exactly what format the event will take. The length of the conversation, the source of the questions, and schedules all still have yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, Lee's daughter, Brianna, wrote an essay this week reflecting on the last few days. The whirlwind of attention was totally unexpected, she says, but it's humbling to know what Lee's position represents to the Asian-American community.
