Vallejo to Build Submarine Memorial on Mare Island

A piece of the USS Vallejo will be displayed on Mare Island.

Vallejo is soon to get a permanent reminder of its important role in Cold War-era submarine warfare.

A memorial honoring the USS Vallejo, one of the seven nuclear submarines built at Mare Island, will be installed at the former Navy shipyard, the Contra Costa Times reported.

The USS Mariano G. Vallejo was built between 1964 and 1965, the newspaper reported, and was one of the 41 nuclear submarines "meant to serve as a deterrent" to the Soviet Union.

The submarine is long gone; only the "sail" -- the tower of the boat "that housed the periscope" -- remains after the vessel was scrapped in 1995. It's the sail that will be installed on the island.

The sail could be installed as soon as 2017, after fundraising is completed. The group has raised about $26,000 out of the final $76,000 bill.
