Van Crashes into San Jose Apartment

Pacific Gas & Electric said the call came in at 1:39 a.m. to the complex at 510 Branham Lane.

Apartment dwellers in San Jose awoke to a crash early Friday, after a van plowed into their building in the southern part of the city.

Pacific Gas & Electric said the call came in at 1:39 a.m. from the Grove Meadow Apartment complex at 510 Branham Lane. When they arrived about 2 a.m., they found the van had sheered off the gas meter, and gas was spewing into the air.

Crews capped the leak at 4:18 a.m., and residents were allowed back in by 5 a.m.

That was a relief to resident Martha Foster, who had to leave her home with her children in a rush, when the van crashed. She piled them in her own van, and drove down the street in the middle of the night.

One person was taken to the hospital because they were feeling ill from the gas odor, firefighters said. It's unclear why the van  drove into the gas line.
