Video Captures Resident Chase Away Bike Thief in San Jose

'There will be no stealing in this neighborhood,' the resident, who lives just outside Willow Glen, said

A man tried to swipe a bike from a home's front porch just outside San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, but an alert resident managed to chase away the bandit and get his hands back on the bicycle.

Surveillance footage from the home located along Mackey Avenue captured the thief appear to cut a lock securing the bike to some railing on the front porch. Bike in hand, the thief started to make a run for it before the vigilant resident, who wished to remain anonymous, burst out of the home and gave chase.

"There will be no stealing in this neighborhood," the resident told NBC Bay Area.

The thief dropped the bike in the front yard of the home at the start of the foot chase and continued to dash across the neighborhood with the resident on his heels before he hopped a fence and got away, the resident said.

In addition to getting the stolen bike back, the resident also said he has the thief's bike, which was parked near the home at the time of the theft.

Residents in upscale Willow Glen are no strangers to thefts, break-ins, carjackings and other crimes — some happening in broad daylight — happening in their neighborhood.
