WWII Veteran Celebrates 100th Birthday in San Jose

A World War II veteran from the South Bay celebrated his 100th birthday Thursday.

About 100 veterans threw a party for Lt. Col. Willard "Bill" Gillette at the veterans housing facility in San Jose.

Gillette flew 59 missions in World War II and even had to bail out of his plane when it started breaking apart. He still drives during the daytime and loves napping.

So what’s his secret?

"If I knew that, I would sell it," Gillette said. "I have no [idea.] My dad had two siblings who lived past 100."

Gillette likes to play golf and can still shoot his age.
