Water District Property Lines May Affect Saratoga Homes

For years the Schuyler family has had their own fence separating their backyard from Calabazas Creek in Saratoga.

But their own fence may not be the true boundary of their property and the property of the Santa Clara Valley Water District.

Residents in the neighborhood received a notice from the water district, who wanted to survey the land to find out exactly where the property line is.

"If in fact for some reason our fence encroaches onto their property, they would come in and just slap down a 42-inch black chain link fence -- and I was a little surprised by that," said Caroline Schuyler.

The Saratoga resident is concerned that a path that she has built in her backyard and blackberry bushes would have to removed.

"If we are encroaching to actually lose some of the property will just be horrible. It would just be horrible," she said. "You spend all this time as a property owner taking care of it. It just doesn't make any sense."

More than 30 homes, mainly on Arroyo De Arguello, may be looking at a three and a half foot black fence at the border of their backyards.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District said it's important to establish where the property lines are so that their crews can have access to the creek.
