Weekend Dilemma: How to Get Into the City

Drivers beware: any roadway leading into San Francisco this weekend will be filled with red brake lights.

There’s a warning out to those who dare to venture onto Bay Area’s roads this weekend , parking will be tight and traffic will be a mess.

People are already trying to avoid it.

As recommended, Pat and Joel McMinn from Benicia ditched their car Friday for a visit to San Francisco, but they missed the last ferry out of the city and that lengthened their stay.

"We came from Vallejo on the ferry and we missed the last ferry, so we’re waiting for the bus,” McMinn said late Friday.

"So I’m the guy who decided we’re not driving today maybe it was a bad decision in the end. The  mass transit venture took us two and a half hours to get here from Vallejo," Joel McMinn added.

The McMinn's story may not be ideal, but parking and traffic Saturday and Sunday will also be unbearable.

"It’s going to be very busy. We have Fleet Week, America’s Cup and the Giants which is good and the 49ers,” Tony Tam of the CHP said.

"If you can walk, I would do walking, if you could bike I would do biking if you can drive I would leave it at home,” Gary Elzy of San Francisco said.

Sgt. Michael Cifuentes sent us this video of a practice round of the Blue Angels.

If you must take your car to Fleet Week, the following schools are opening parking lots for a fee:

  • Lafayette Elementary - 4545 Anza St. at 36th Avenue [enter on 36th between Anza and Balboa]
  • Presidio Middle School - 450 30th Ave. at Geary Boulevard [enter on 29th Ave]
  • Jefferson Elementary - 1725 Irving St. between 18th &19th Avenues [enter on 18th]
  • Argonne Elementary - 680 18th Ave. at Cabrillo [enter on 17th Avenue]
  • Washington High School - 600 32nd Ave. [enter at 30th Ave. & Anza]
