When the Mayor Tweets an Army Listens

Mayor Gavin Newsom is no stranger to attention. Now he is drawing large crowds on line.

Mayor Gavin Newsom is becoming a huge Internet star. No not a la Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton.

The would be governor (if it was up to him) has taken a shining to Twitter and the San Francisco-based social networking site has taken a liking to our favorite greased up Bay Area pol. The mayor has amassed more than 100,000 follower on Twitter who anxiously await every mention of the mayor's runs through the Presidio or guessing what "hilarious pun on David Chiu's name" Newsom came up with.

The mayor has amassed a following more than twice the size of the entire CNN network on Twitter and he only trails President Barack Obama by some 200,000 followers. Okay that is a lot but still one is the mayor of a city and the other is the first African-American president in the western world, let alone America.

Now our friends at SF Weekly (they really are our friends because they "stole" one of our web producers last week) have been tracking the mayor's tweets and have come up with a rather amusing list of his more memorable tweets.

Like what you ask? How about  "'Alioto.' That's a fun name to say. 'Al-e-o-toe,'" or "Sometimes I think Barack Obama hates me. But why? Why? He probably feels threatened."

The paper is getting ready to publish an article on the Twitter habits of the mayor. But until then check out their list of fun tweets and join us in laughter.
