Where to Find Free Fruit in San Jose and Beyond

A crowdsourced map aims to pinpoint trees on public property that bear fruit that is safe to pick.

SFGate noted that the nonprofit Falling Fruit project, which maps out where you can find free fruit on trees around the world, has 9,000 entries in San Francisco.

The map also has more than 7,000 documented listings between Redwood City and San Jose. There's a particularly dense collection of offerings including cherry plum and orange trees in Menlo Park and Palo Alto. Trees bearing produce that average eaters would be less likely to consume, such as gingko and carob, are plentiful in the two cities.

San Jose's offerings are more sparse but also more varied. In Broadway-Palmhaven, a picker can score globe artichokes, peaches, persimmons and apples, for example.

The public is invited to add sources to the site when appropriate.
