Wildfire Forces Evacuations in Trinity County

A fast-growing wildfire in Northern California has forced the evacuation of an unknown number of homes near the historic town of Weaverville.

State fire spokesman Daniel Berlant says the fire was sparked near State Route 299 Sunday afternoon, and rapidly grew to 400 acres in less than three hours.

Berlant said gusty winds and extremely dry conditions were fueling the flames.

He said numerous structures were threatened by the fire, but he didn't have an exact count.

Weaverville is at the base of the Trinity Alps Wilderness area in Trinity County.
