Woman, 24, Dies After Being Struck by Mercedes in Walnut Creek

A 24-year-old woman who had car trouble and stood in the traffic lane of the highway in Walnut Creek while waiting for help was killed by an oncoming Mercedes, whose driver didn't see her, according to the California Highway Patrol.

In a statement on Facebook, the CHP said the woman had some car trouble on Sunday about 11 p.m. She parked on the right should of the Rudgear Road onramp to Interstate 680 southbound, activated her hazard lights and called a co-worker for help.

Then for "unknown reasons," she got out of her car and "stood in the traffic lane of the on-ramp," the CHP said.

The driver of a gray Mercedes entering the on ramp was unable to stop or avoid the woman, fatally striking her, the CHP said, and she died. The coroner later identified her as Diana Quezada-Martinez of Pittsburg.

The CHP said the Mercedes driver remained at the scene following the collision and fully cooperated with officers. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this incident.
