Woman Escapes Fremont Fire: 2 Dogs, 2 Rabbits Die in Blaze

A woman managed to escape her burning Fremont home through her bedroom window Monday morning, but two of her dogs and two rabbits died and her cat remains missing, a fire division chief said.

The fire was reported at about 6 a.m. in the 1000 block of Kraftile Road. The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, Fremont fire Division Chief Diane Hendry said.

The 40-year-old woman woke up to crackling sounds, and when she opened her bedroom door, the room filled with smoke. She immediately closed the door and escaped out her bedroom window, Hendry said.

Firefighters took about 30 minutes to control the fire, attacking it from the inside and hacking apart the roof for ventilation, but the house was a total loss with an estimated $200,000 in damage, Hendry said.

Fire investigators found two dogs and two rabbits dead inside the home and a cat is still missing, Hendry said. There were no other injuries.

Hendry said the older-model home is in a neighborhood full of thick overgrowth, so finding and fighting the fire was challenging but "crews did a great job." The woman had lived in the home for about 15 years.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the blaze.
