Girl, 14, Fatally Struck by Freight Train in Martinez

A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed by a freight train traveling through Martinez Sunday evening, police said.

Emergency crews received a report that a female had been struck by a train on the railroad tracks near Old Orchard and Howe roads at about 5 p.m., according to police.

The female was pronounced deceased near the railroad tracks.

According to the Contra Costa Times, the girl was possibly trying to grab her cell phone on the tracks when she was hit.

Her identity has not been released, pending notification of her next of kin.

The incident remains under investigation by the freight railroad company, BNSF Railway.
