Woman Guilty in Craigslist Scam

Rental ruse collected more than $100,000.

A California woman has pleaded guilty to a $110,000 Craigslist apartment rental scam.

Prosecutors say 30-year-old Rachael Marie Smith posted ads on the Craigslist Internet site offering to rent her San Francisco apartment.

Eighteen people signed leases and each gave her $5,600 first months' rent and security deposit.

Smith, who told would-be tenants they couldn't move in immediately because her mother had cancer, was actually a tenant in the apartment building.

The San Francisco Chronicle says Smith faces two years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to three counts of grand theft. She will also be ordered to pay restitution.
