Richmond Woman Suffers Hit & Run Twice, Dies

Both drivers left the area

Family members of a 49-year-old woman who was fatally struck by  two hit-and-run drivers while riding her bicycle in Richmond Saturday evening  held a news conference Monday pleading for witnesses to come forward.

Family members described the victim, Laura Casey, as a loving  woman and an experienced cyclist. They urged the drivers who killed her to  come forward, Richmond police Lt. Enos Johnson said.

The police department is also offering a $10,000 reward for  information leading to the arrest and conviction of the hit-and-run drivers,  according to Johnson.

Casey was riding her bicycle on Carlson Boulevard at Ohio Avenue  at about 6 p.m. when a white four-door sedan struck her and knocked her off  her bicycle, police said.

Witnesses said the driver paused momentarily before fleeing.

Both drivers fled the scene of the crash, according to police.

Casey was struck at about 6 p.m. by a white four-door sedan traveling south on Carlson Boulevard at Ohio Avenue, Lt. Manjit Sappal said.  Witnesses said the driver paused momentarily before driving off.

Casey was on the ground and calling for help when the second unidentified vehicle hit her and then fled.

That vehicle was seen dragging the woman for 25 feet.

People who live nearby said it is possible that the first driver didn't realize he or she hit a cyclist. It seemed less likely that the second driver was not aware of what had happened. Witnesses said the woman was lying on the road, screaming, before the second car came along.

"The second car that hit her knew it was a human being. I mean they just had to know it. I feel it is very inhuman to do that to a person," said one woman who would not give her name. "She was a nice person, friendly and would come and visit her mom at her house and she would see me cleaning the yard and would say 'Hi, how are you doing.'"

She was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Sappal said.

One man who did not want to give his name said he wondered if either driver is bothered by what they did. "If it was me I couldn't sleep at night and I would go and turn myself in because I don't want the law to come looking for me," he said.

Police said the first car was a white, four-door sedan. However, they have no description of the second vehicle.

Police Monday afternoon still didn't have any information about the  second vehicle, Johnson said.

Witnesses are urged to call the Richmond Police Department at  510-233-1214 or Officer Ramon Middleton at 510-621-1583.
