Thanks To Mozilla, Yahoo Gains Ground on Google

Google now has 74.8 percent of search results.

Google is used for 74.8 percent of U.S. search referrals, by far the most of any search engine. But for the first time in five years, Google's share is less than 75 percent -- and Yahoo, meanwhile, a distant third at 10.9 percent, had its highest share in that same time frame, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

This is largely due to product placement: Yahoo is the new default search engine for Mozilla Firefox, the newspaper noted. That has helped Yahoo catapult from 8.6 percent of searches to its nearly 11 percent stake today. (Correction: An earlier version of this story erroneously reported Yahoo is Firefox's default browser)

Google, meanwhile, has launched a campaign to woo users away from Yahoo. But Yahoo isn't through: CEO Marissa Mayer says her company will try to become the default search engine on Apple's Safari browser as well.
