5-Year-Old Who Saved Grandmother From Fire Gets Toy Shopping Spree

"He was all smiles for sure," firefighter Jeff Allen said.

A 5-year-old boy hailed a hero for saving his grandmother from their burning California home was rewarded by the fire department with a shopping spree to replace the toys he lost.

The San Bernardino County Professional Firefighters Local 935 Union sponsored the Target shopping spree for Nathaniel Stocks on Sunday morning, San Bernardino County Firefighter Jeff Allen said.

"He was pretty excited," Allen said. "He was all smiles for sure."

Firefighters purchased a gift card and Nathaniel was able to pick out several toys. According to Allen, Nathaniel was looking forward to buying a Buzz Lightyear toy.

Nathaniel saved his grandmother Nov. 7 when he awoke to a fire at their home in Phelan. The boy crawled to his grandmother's room and woke her, San Bernardino County fire officials said.

Just two days before, Nathaniel was among a group of 100 kindergartners from Phelan Elementary School who visited County Fire Station 10 in Phelan. The students were given a station tour and lessons on fire safety.

Most of Nathaniel's toys were destroyed in the fire.

"We deal with a lot of negativity, so anytime we're able to give back and do something positive, it makes our day," Allen said.

The union was in touch with Nathaniel's grandmother — who was appreciative of the firefighters' kindness — to set up the shopping trip.

According to Allen, the union sponsored the event and no taxpayer money was used.
