57-Year-Old Man Partially Paralyzed By Cop Improving: Attorney

A 57-year-old Indian man, who was slammed to the ground last week by an Alabama police officer, leaving him partially paralyzed is improving, family Attorney Hank Sherrod told MSNBC Friday. "He is improving faster than expected," said Sherrod. Sureshbhai Pate still remains in the hospital following the Feb. 6 confrontation with police that was caught on an officer's cruise dash-cams. Patel, who lives in India and speaks no English, traveled to Alabama to visit his son. He was walking around the neighborhood, when a neighbor called 911 and reported that a "skinny black guy" wandering the street. Police say Patel tried to walk away. One of the officers forced him to the ground, resulting in injuries to his neck and later requiring cervical fusion surgery, the family said. Officer Eric Parker was arrested on an assault charge and is expected to be fired, according to officials. Patel's family is filing a civil rights lawsuit against Madison police, the attorney said.
