34,500 Acorn Stairlifts Recalled After Reports of Deaths in U.K.

A stairlift manufacturer has recalled around 34,500 models in the U.S. after reports that two people in the U.K. were killed when the chairs fell apart.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday that Acorn Stairlifts, the British manufacturer of the $3,400 mechanical stairs, advised owners of certain models to contact the company immediately.

The warning came after two reports from the U.K. that people had died after "the seat post had separated from the main seat support," the agency said.

The models being recalled were five versions of the Acorn Superglide 120, which was manufactured in Britain and sold for around $3,400 between March 2007 and December 2011.
