SUV Crashes Into Wendy's in Maryland

A patron and an employee of the restaurant were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of an SUV who crashed into a Lanham, Md., Wendy's Friday evening has been charged with driving under the influence, Prince George's County Police said Monday.

The Chevy Trailblazer went through a front window and almost all the way up to the counter, the Associated Press reported.

Police said that moments before the crash, the driver of the Trailblazer failed to move after a traffic light turned green. Another driver honked at the Trailblazer driver, who then hit the accelerator, drove through bushes, across the parking lot and into the Wendy's.

Numerous patrons and employees were inside at the time. Police said five people were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. At least two had neck and back injuries, reported News4's Darcy Spencer.

A female employee was taken to the hospital later for anxiety.

According to Prince George's County Fire and EMS, five people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the accident at 9401 Annapolis Road and were transported to a local hospital.

Sources told Spencer the driver was taken into custody immediately after the crash under suspicion of DUI.

"I was making sandwiches and then I heard a screeching sound really loud," said employee Isioma Obima. "I turned around and I just saw the car drive through the window and then I heard this loud noise, the windows breaking and around.... I was still in shock, just standing and looking.... I just can't believe it. What were they thinking?"

The restaurant remained closed as of mid-day Monday.
